It tells the story of a young prince who lived in a sumptuous castle. Although life showered him with all its bounties, the prince was a capricious, selfish and insensitive man. One winter evening, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a rose in exchange for shelter from the cold. Repulsed by her miserable appearance, the prince chased the old woman away. She tried to make him understand that one should never trust appearances, and that true beauty comes from the heart. As punishment, she turned him into a monstrous beast and cast a spell over the castle and all its occupants.

Horrified by his appalling appearance, the Beast retired to the depths of his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window on the outside world. The rose he had been given was an enchanted one that would wither only on his twenty-first birthday. Before the last petal of the magic flower fell, the prince would have to love a woman and make her love him back in order to break the spell. Otherwise, he would be condemned to look like a monster for eternity. The more the years passed, the more the prince lost all hope of escaping this curse; for in reality, who could ever love... a beast?"

GALERIE DES HOSPICES

Originally known as the Anciennes Ecuries des Hospices, this building on the village's central avenue stands on the ancient ramparts of the fortified town of Canet en Roussillon. Built at the end of the 18th century as stables, it was later transformed into a private wine cellar. Since 1999, the site has hosted year-round exhibitions of pictorial and sculptural works, which you can visit free of charge.
